You will be spending a great deal of time on this site, so take this opportunity to bookmark this url or email yourself a link!
During this class, you will keep your own blog to document your thought process throughout the semester. We will begin by determining which industry you would like to pursue. Then after researching this field and analyzing what skills you will need to both enter it and excel, we will then help you tailor your efforts to make yourself as prepared as possible to meet the demands of the industry.
We will also go on field trips and meet with professionals at their studios to discuss what they do, what training they received, how they got into their positions and where they see themselves and their industries in five years. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about different careers and industries as well as to network with high level professionals.
Digital and social media will play a big role in this class and you are encouraged and required to investigate, experiment and participate in as many as possible. You will learn how these technologies can aid you in networking and increasing exposure for your work and skills. Many of these communities will also be great outside sources for critique.
After getting a firm understanding for the skills necessary to enter your desired field, you will then work on developing a digital portfolio that exhibits your work in a manner which exemplifies these attributes. By thoroughly researching different formats for your portfolio and other professionals' sites, you will determine the best approach for your portfolio, considering your industry and skill level.
A major component to this course is research. Your blog posts will help you prepare for a 5-7 page research paper on your industry, how it has changed over the course of 30 years, how technology has impacted the field and what skills you will need to obtain a high level position in this career path. You will also be required to present your research to the class.
The final for this course will be to present your portfolio, resume and cover letter in a mock interview, conducted by real professionals.
This course is intense, requires a high level of participation and involvement as well as commitment to your future. I am extremely excited to help you in this journey and know you will be so much more prepared upon its completion.
