When approaching a "problem" and attempting to "solve" it, there are certain steps to take that will help break the situation down into smaller, more comprehensible chunks. From there we can more clearly see the next actions we must take to slowly, but surely, work through the situation at hand to achieve success!

In our case, our "problem" is that we need to figure out what we're going to do with our lives after we finish our course work at MCCC. That question in and of itself is really scary and very intimidating. There are so many jobs out there and different schools to which we can apply; and at the same time, we're hearing all this frightening news about a bad economy and unstable job market.

Where do we start?!

This may sound like a dumb and obvious answer - but you start at the beginning! Lets work through the problem solving process. Step 1: Define the problem!

  • We need to know what to do with our lives after graduating from MCCC.
  • We said earlier - we already know we could get a job or go to school, but what should we look for in a job and what should we study?

Before we can work through the process to find the answers to these questions, we have to understand how jobs and education fit into the larger picture of the arc of our lives.

Our education gives us the skills we need to apply for jobs and get work. Work is necessary to make money to live and succeed. That's all pretty basic and I think we can all follow that line of logic. However, when we start looking at jobs more than just merely "work to get money," we can see how the individual jobs we may hold throughout our lives culminate to form a career. Throughout the course of our career, the work we do contributes to the advancements and achievements of a particular industry.

The concept of "industry" is discussed a lot in our syllabus and blog assignments - but what does that really mean? How can understanding this concept help us figure out what we want to do when we graduate? To help us define this term, in class this week, we worked together on a mind map using MindMeister.com to brainstorm around this concept.

What conclusions can we draw from this brainstorming exercise? How do WE and our jobs fit into this larger picture? Comment with your thoughts.
